mmm, corn muffins

this weekend i flew back from california on saturday early (had to get up at 4:30 AM PST, yuck) because jenn and i were heading down to chelsea, michigan to see a play and stay overnight at a bed & breakfast. for those of you who don't know, chelsea is the home of jeff daniels (see his actor page).

jeff founded a theatre right downtown called the purple rose. this theatre is totally a small-town theatre: it has 3 sections, each with 5 rows, each with about 11 seats. i think the total seating was 168 or something like that. the theatre's charter is to promote plays which were written by, directed by, and starring local talent. we saw "the glass menagerie", the famous tennessee williams play. i'm no play critic or connisseur, but i thought it was very well done.

we stayed at the chelsea house inn, a historic 1881 home which the current owners completely renovated between 1994 and 2000. the guy did most of the work himself over that time, and it is beautiful. it's up for sale at the moment, so if you have $849k to spend and you want to run an inn in a small michigan town, this one's for you! (the business is finally in the black and growing.) see the list page here: http://www.realtor.com/Prop/1047134229.

on the way out of town, we passed the major locally owned business: the jiffy mix company. the plant is literally one block from town center. here are a couple shots of where you get your cornbread mix!

yeah, screw the beautiful rocky mountains and all that crap. as herb would say, “it’s all just rocks and trees, rocks and trees.” we’re into flat, gray, and corn muffins.
