it really IS it
for those of you who never lived in or visited the san francisco area, you've probably never had the chance to try a local treat: "It's It" ice cream sandwiches. hands down it's the best grab-it-from-the-freezer-at-the-gas-station food. screw you, drumstick! outta the way, push-up! go melt yourself, strawberry scooter crunch bar!
picture this with your taste buds: two soft, sweet oatmeal cookies, with a thick layer of vanilla (or chocolate, or mint, or cappucino) ice cream sandwiched between them. cover the whole thing with a milk chocolate shell. it's 340 calories of pure scrumdilliyiciousness. plus, it's way more food than 1/4 of a pint of ben and jerry's or haagen-dazs, which will cost you about the same number of calories. bonus!
for a mere $84, you can even have some shipped to your house. (that's $17 for 24 sandwiches plus $67 for overnight shipping.) expensive? yes. worth every nickel? definitely. have i ever done this? no. so don't blame me if you order some and they show up melted.

mmmm, coffeecake
woke up this morning to.... no food in the fridge. time to hit old favorite #2. with sincerest apologies to the crew at rebecca's in northville, hobee's still has the best breakfast around. too bad they don't want to expand out of california!

goin' back to cali... with everyone in tow
we just arrived back at our old stomping grounds in mountain view. this time i brought the whole clan (complete with 4.5 hour plane ride -- nate was about to lose his mind (and so was i)). jenn found a rental house about a 10 minute walk from downtown -- the people were leaving the country for vacation and wanted to make a few bucks. hopefully it will work out. we forgot, though, that these old 1950's houses have no air conditioning, so it's about 10 degrees warmer than at home. time to buy some fans!
we wasted no time in hitting our old favorite places to eat. the kids were hungry when we were coming home from the airport (at 10pm EDT) so we stopped at "burrito real", where you can get some killer burritos and nachos. of course, i forgot to take photos. but trust me when i tell you that jenn's nacho plate was piled so high that she barely ate half and was overstuffed.
more to follow...

seven-year itch
well, as of today jenn and i have been married for 7 years. wow. it's gone insanely fast, especially the last 2 or 3 years. but it's also gone slow -- looking back, so much has happened it MUST have gone slow, right?
we've been together over 10 years now, and married for 7. in that time, we've bought houses, got dogs, had two beautiful kids, gone through the deaths of close family members, moved from michigan to california and back (what the hell were we thinking on that one?), and did i mention the wonderful kids? our cups truly runneth over.
with that, at the risk of embarrassing jenn (and myself, given the ribbing i am bound to take from my macho friends) in a public forum, i have an anniversary message for her:
i love you more now than ever. i'm so glad i chose you, and i'm more glad that you could see through the
marriage-phobic twentysomething that i used to be, and that you are still willing to put up with me even
with all my idiosyncrasies! we have a beautiful family, and you are the main reason our kids are the
wonderful little people they are. i am definitely looking forward to the next seven years and more itching.
(maybe i can get some cream for that.) (just kidding. given where we live, the only itch i am feeling is
most likely a bug bite. :p) i hope that we have many more "seven years" ahead.
time for a little before and after. who'd have guessed that this:
would ever turn into this?
